SANDAG Update On Beach Sand Replineshment
The Regional Beach Sand Project will place sand on eight area beaches from Imperial Beach to Oceanside, including Moonlight Beach in Encinitas. Replenishment is scheduled to begin in early September for San Diego County.
Building upon the success of the 2001 Regional Beach Sand Project (RBSP), SANDAG is embarking on a second RBSP that will place 1.4 million cubic yards of beach quality sand on regional beaches in the summer and fall of 2012.
Through funding from the California Department of Boating and Waterways and contributions from the region’s coastal cities, SANDAG will continue the process of restoring the region’s eroded beaches by implementing proactive measures to protect and enhance the quality of the region’s coastline.
Beach Sand Replineshment Weekly Construction Activities
Imperial Beach – September 5 to 11
The Liberty Island dredge has arrived! A press conference to announce the start of construction is scheduled for Saturday morning. After construction begins, the project will continue south to where the rock wall ends before turning north to end near Elkwood avenue in early October.
Work will occur 24 hours a day, seven days a week unless otherwise noticed.
A portion of the Descanso Avenue parking lot is reserved for project use through early to mid-October. All reserved parking spots are clearly marked.
A large pipe will remain in the water for the duration of the project in the City of Imperial Beach. Please use caution while in the water. The area around the pipe is clearly marked from the beach.
Construction Timeline
Imperial Beach: early September for approximately four weeks
Oceanside: early October
Moonlight Beach: mid-October
Cardiff State Beach: late October
Batiquitos: late October
Solana Beach: early November
North Carlsbad Beach: mid-November
South Carlsbad Beach: late November
This timeline is approximate and dates may vary based on weather or other unforeseen delays. Mobilization of equipment may occur up to two weeks prior to sand placement.
