First known shark attack fatality in North County, San Diego. Believed to be a 12-17 foot Great White. Early press conference footage shortly after attack, from Fletcher Cove in Solana Beach with Deputy Fire Chief, Mayor, and Lifeguard Captain. Victim was Dr. David Martin, 66 year old swimmer, April, 25, 2008. Footage from photojournalist Ari Marsh with his additional commentary below: It was a beautiful morning in North County, almost pristine, with warm weather and small, glassy surf. I was in Encinitas, near Moonlight Beach, when Coast Guard helicopters began flying up and down the coast broadcasting a shocking announcement. “There has been a fatal shark attack in the area. Exit the ocean immediately!” I was stunned, having lived most of my life by the ocean in Southern California, and being a surfer for the last 25 years, I’ve never experienced something like this. As the eerie helicopter announcements continued, surfers and swimmers evacuated, leaving this pristine morning strangely vacant. Details surfaced soon after, near the site of the attack in Solana Beach. Apparently, the attack happened at approximately 7:00 am, Friday morning, April 25, 2008, near a surf break known as Tabletops, near Fletcher Cove in Solana Beach. A group of strong swimmers in training for a triathlon were approximately 100-150 yards off the coast, when one of the men, 66 year old Dr. David Martin, a healthy, retired veterinarian, began screaming for help. His friends nearby him in the …

rather than that catch a shark and put it in there swimming pool
….we ‘can’, but we shouldn’t.
I hope that all of you who think this video is funny know that I knew the victim personally and if I knew where you were right now I would punch you so hard in the face you’d have to talk out of your a******
who asked for your sympathy? and killing the shark won’t change a thing it’s an ocean afterall and he owns it. but the guy is dead I think praying for him is way better than mentioning ignorance and stupidity.
R.I.P
gf humen gf shark
Truly tragic, but preventable. What’s he doing 200 yards offshore? We saw people swimming across 12-mile-wide Buzzards Bay and 2-mile-wide Vineyard Sound (both in Massachusetts) last week. More triathletes, I guess. Brilliant—-both areas known as haunts of the Great White. Kid was killed by one in Mattapoisett, MA way back in 1936, I’ve seen about a 15-foot Great White from my sailboat. Gotta be smart about the ocean.
What I don’t get is why people expect sympathy when something like this happens. You put yourself in an environment where you are no longer at the top of the food chain and expect sympathy for your ignorance and stupidity? Jeez!
I <3 SHARKS!!!
We are a bunch of Dumbasses to be killing Sharks,Elephants kill more then Sharks yet Elephants are trying to be saved while Sharks are being Destroyed!
Copy and paste any other shark vids around!
I was a semi pro surfer in San Diego for over 15 years. I surfed winter as well as summer. Never saw or heard of a shark in the area. We saw dolphins, but nary a shark.
i was there spring break last year shit i went at that beach 2 days before the attack yikes i remember this
about 15 yrs ago, I saw footage of a huge shark coming out of the water and taking a surfer right off his board in his jaws. It was unbelievable.
I have searched for some time to try to find that footage, and thought it would turn up on youtube, but its like it never existed.
If anyone has a copy of it, I would like to see it.
Its NOt the footage of the two great whites attacking the surfer at the same time.
when i was at the beach of solana i saw helicopters with light on looking at the water at night when i was in my bike now i know y they kept pasing by. thanks person who uploaded this
Is August a risky month ?
Which is the most safety month (shark-less) ?
i went swimming in socal last summer.. at the same beach
why close the beach its like going into the jungle and being eatin by a tiger its natural selection you wouldnt close down the whole jungle
Was the shark on fire?
yes but the only sharks in la jolla are the leopard shark and the horn shark, and they will only attack when provoked. my daughter swam with them and was fine. The most they could do was probably take off a finger or two. it may sound painful, but it’s not much compared to what is in Hawaii (tiger sharks *shutters*)
awful i feel sorry for the victims family, my brother lives in san diego and thats how i heard about it!. The man was 66 and a vet believe it or not! retired. crazy u care for animals all ur life then this!. the world can be a nasty place!. he was training for a trailathlon with 2 other blokes wich was stated. i did actually hear the extent of the damage but outa respect i wont tell u that.
Yeah because if you have a very bad luck a shark will eat you or just take a bite. The last time there was a fatal shark attack in San Diego was 14 years ago.
Why would fire department respond to beach shark attack?
This is really a 1950 Plymouth.
