Daylight Saving Time – “Spring ahead, fall behind,” Do you really need it? Daylight saving time is the practice of advancing clocks during summer months so that evening daylight lasts longer, at the expense of sacrificing normal sunrise times. Typically, regions that use daylight saving time adjust clocks forward one hour close to the start of spring and adjust them backward in the autumn to standard time. In effect, DST causes a lost hour of sleep in the spring and an extra hour of sleep in the fall. Who likes to feel groggy instead of alert.
“You will never find anybody who can give you a clear and compelling reason
why we observe daylight saving time.” — Dave Barry
Who Doesn’t Observe Daylight Saving Time? (Besides my teenager?) Most areas of the United States observe daylight saving time (DST), the exceptions being Hawaii and Arizona and the overseas territories of American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, and the United States Virgin Islands. The Uniform Time Act of 1966 established the system of uniform Daylight Saving Time throughout the US.
One Hour Time Change Can Be Harmful To Your Health: “You might not think that a one hour change is a lot,” says Fred Turek, who directs the Center for Sleep & Circadian Biology at Northwestern University. “But it turns out that the master clock in our brain is pretty hard-wired, ” Turek explains. It’s synchronized to the 24-hour light/dark cycle.
Scientists have documented that the shift to daylight saving time in the spring, when we lose an hour of sleep, is linked to an increased risk of heart attacks and a rise in traffic accidents.
